As you know, if you would like to make handle any thick fabrics such as Denim and jeans, most likely you would require those heavy duty sewing machines to get the job done. As those kind of materials are not easy to deal with, smaller or non heavy duty types of machines will have a hard time handling them.
Since you already know this, so which sewing machine brand or model should you go for? Which one is the best? This is where I come in, I am going to tell you what to look out for, what features you should pay attention for and why.
No matter if you are sewing your own jeans, denim jackets or some other thicker fabrics, you may already have those basic home sewing machine that can get the job done. However, if you are doing a lot of sewing on thick heavy fabrics or even multiple layers of fabrics, it is best to consider investing in a sewing machine that can perform those heavy works.
Now that you are prepare to invest in a new model for your sewing project, let me show you what to look out for when getting a new unit.
Things To Look For in a Heavy Duty Sewing Machine
Adjustable Presser Foot Lift – You will want to have this feature so that you can easily fit bulky fabrics or multiple layers fabric under the presser foot without any problems.
A Powerful Motor – In order to sew through heavy materials such as denim, a strong powerful motor is a must for the needle to drive through them. Sewing machines for beginners usually comes with weak motors that will wears out faster.
Needles for Denim or Jeans – Needle plays a very important role here no matter which machine you decide to buy. Since we are talking about thick fabrics, you will need a needle that is sharper and larger than your normal needle. These types of needles are called Denim or Jean needles that are specially made. The reason this type of needle works is because they are thick, strong and comes with a sharp point to handle denim.
Leveling Button – You may not have noticed but this leveling button is located on the presser foot and is usually black in color. This handy little button comes into play when you want to sew multiple layers of fabrics.
The above features are going to make your life a lot easier when dealing with heavy or thick materials. So now, I am going to recommend to you some of the machines that you can find on Amazon that are best used to sew denim and jeans.
Janome HD3000 is not hard to learn and claims to be able to work well for heavy duty sewing. Not only can you use it for thicker fabrics, it can also be used for multiple sewing tasks. If you are afraid of learning how to use this machine, don’t be, at the top tray of the machine, there is an visual instructional guide that comes in handy.
Winding the bobbin and threading are also very easy. In fact, if you have used other Janome models before, the process is the same. If not, it is not difficult to learn at all. The built in thread cutter save you the trouble of looking for scissors when you want to switch thread.
The one step buttonhole and the storage compartment allows you handle any kind of sewing projects because you can get all the needle, thread and feet anytime you want.
- All basic stitches and some additional fanciful ones.
- Triple strength stitch which is good for heavy materials
- Able to handle light and slippery fabrics well too
- Multiple layers of sewing
- Handy instructional guide located at the top tray door of the machine
- A little bit pricey even though when there is a sale
- May not work very well when trying to sew a leather, so if your projects includes a lot of leather, this Janome HD3000 might not be suitable for you
- Even though it is stated in Amazon that it is perfect for a beginner, I would think that otherwise. If you do not have much sewing experience, it may not be ideal for you.
If you are experience and would like to work on sewing denim and jeans, I would actually recommend you to give this a try. However, if you have budget constraints and just only start to learn sewing, I would recommend you to look for other models below. Another thing you need to take note is that this unit may not work very well with leather.
Slightly cheaper than the HD3000 model, this HD1000 comes with 14 built-in stitches and a 4 step buttonhole. With the body that is made of cast aluminum, this machine is built to last for a long time. Some people are having a hard time threading the needle and if you are one of them, the built-in automatic needle threader allows you to do it with ease.
With the HD1000 unit, you do not have to purchase those extra accessories. This model comes with Two Screwdrivers, Felt, Buttonhole Ripper, Zipper Foot, bobbins and many other more. Based on this alone, you are going to save yourself some good money there. Of course, there is also a storage tray so that you are able to keep all those accessories nicely in one place.
- Durable – Body of the machine is made of cast aluminum that is much tougher than those made of plastic
- For people who has a hard time threading the needle, the automatic needle threader is going to be the savior of the day.
- Easy to use
- Works well with multiple layers and heavy fabrics
- Threads will get tangled up in the bobbin areas
- Difficulty in replacing the bobbin
Some people seems to be having the problem with the bobbin. No doubt that it is a good machine, but if it cannot sew properly, then it is of no use at all. Sometimes, luck does plays a part when buying new things.
What I suggest is if you decided to buy this model (Janome HD1000), do not leave it there and use later when it arrived. Go ahead and test it thoroughly, report to Amazon immediately if your machine have problems.
Here is another sewing machine from Janome. Firstly, this DC2014 computerized sewing machine has an amazing average rating of 4.8 out of 5 in Amazon when writing this post. Out of the 79 customers’ reviews currently, 84% of them gave a 5 star rating, 15% gave 4 stars and only 1% of the reviews are rated 2 stars. So now, let’s see what is so good about this machine and see if it deserve its rating.
With 50 built-in stitches, it comes with features that you need for any sewing projects: Garment sewing, quilting, scrape booking and many more. Some other features include the built-in needle threader, easy reverse, a speed control slider as well as an auto lock button.
- Works for you quietly
- Easy to use and easy to fill the bobbin too
- Good and simple instructions, beginners are able to pick up fast
- Price, slightly more expensive but it is definitely well worth it for its qualities
- One of the missing feature that I felt would be useful here is the automatic thread cutter
I would say that this is one of the best computerized heavy duty sewing machine. However, the price may be out of reach for most people. If you sew a lot and quite frequently, then I would recommend this unit. If you are going to be sewing only when required, I would recommend you to take a look at some other cheaper units.
Compared to the above reviews that I have done, this is the cheapest unit among all of them. Comes with heavy duty metal frame, it is able to hold the machine in place for skip free sewing. Have you ever encountered machines that have problems while feeding? Not this, the stainless steel bed plate ensures you to have smooth fabric feeding throughout.
Even thought it only has 32 built-in stitches, you should be able to complete most sewing tasks without hassles. As its name implies, the extra high sewing speed of 1,100 stitches per minute allows you to complete more sewing projects in lesser time. Again, the automatic needle threader is going to save you a lot of time if you have problems with threading needles.
- Cheap heavy duty sewing machines as compared to most brands
- Works well with both light and heavy materials
- Complete more work in lesser amount of time
- From my research, it seems like the main problem for unhappy buyers is that the machine they owed dies on them after few months of usage.
This machine can helps you to complete more works in a shorter amount of time. It does seems like there are a handful of people complaining that it does not work anymore after using for only a few months. Because of this, the unit may be working well for me for a long time but dies on you in a shorter time frame. As I have mentioned before, sometimes luck plays a part for the stuffs that we bought. My advise would be the same for all things that you have bought, check and test it thoroughly. Same for this if you decide to buy it.
With 100 unique built-in stitches, it is perfect for a wide range of quilting and sewing projects. Comes with a LCD display, you can now select the type of stitches, adjust the stitch length and width easily. It is also lightweight and portable which means that you can bring this around without much problems. Ideal to bring to sewing classes. Best of all, it is cheap as well.
Brother XR9500PRW also includes many accessories such as Zipper foot, Button Sewing foot, Buttonhole foot, Zigzag foot, accessory pouch with needle set, extra spool pin, ball point needle, bobbins (3), cleaning brush, power cord, Operation Manual and much much more.
With a high rating of 4.6 out of 5 (as of writing), you can bet that there are a lot of happy buyers.
- Convenient speed adjustment switch – select the speed accordingly to your need
- Great value for a great machine
- Easy to learn and use
- Large working table attachment
- Monogramming feature which only available mostly in more expensive units
- Hard to get the right tension
- Some buyers are having problems with the needle threader
- Not very sturdy
For a heavy duty sewing machine, I can say that the price for this Brother XR9500PRW is totally worth it. It is currently less than $200 dollars in Amazon (at the time of writing this review).
